Former Defense Secretary Rumsfeld Dead at 88

He oversaw Pentagon response to 9/11.

Donald Rumsfeld, the former Defense Secretary who served two presidents, has passed away at the age of 88.

A statement from the family said, “It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Donald Rumsfeld, an American statesman and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. At 88, he was surrounded by family in his beloved Taos, New Mexico.

“History may remember him for his extraordinary accomplishments over six decades of public service, but for those who knew him best and whose lives were forever changed as a result, we will remember his unwavering love for his wife Joyce, his family and friends, and the integrity he brought to a life dedicated to country.”

He was a man of faith who often quoted the Bible. Of himself, he once said, “Blessed are the peace-makers for they shall be called the children of God “ (Matthew 5:9).

Rumsfeld served as Secretary of Defense in the administrations of Presidents Gerald Ford and George W. Bush. On the heels of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Rumsfeld directed the Pentagon’s response—a U.S. military attack on Afghanistan that led to the toppling of the Taliban. Two years later, he oversaw America’s invasion of Iraq.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For the loved ones of Donald Rumsfeld as they mourn.
  • With gratitude for the service of the former defense secretary over decades.
  • For wisdom for the current defense secretary as he leads the U.S. armed forces.
